I work at a doctors practice and have been tasked with creating an intranet. We want to try and do it free and host it on our own server but i’ve not done it before. We want to use it for the usual stuff….HR Protocols and Policies, Updates, Links to the documents and the internet etc.

Do you know any web design? I look after our comany intranet and we have a webserver in London but we pay per month for it.

Get an idea of content and pice it together bit by bit. Yuo can use a program called wordpress which is free and easy to use and manage.

The WordPress answer works well if you want a “static” intranet. However a lot of businesses are opting for a Wiki-style site, where it is collaborative. The more that employees contribute and add to help others, ultimately helps the company.

An OpenSource (OS) (free) site to consider would be: http://www.openatrium.com: Open Atrium is an intranet in a box that has group spaces to allow different teams to have their own conversations. It comes with six features – a blog, a wiki, a calendar, a to do list, a shoutbox, and a dashboard to manage it all

Another option is: TWiki® is a flexible, powerful, and easy to use enterprise wiki, enterprise collaboration platform, and web application platform. It is a Structured Wiki, typically used to run a project development space, a document management system, a knowledge base, or any other groupware tool, on an intranet, extranet or the Internet.

I hope this helps. I’ve only listed two. We use OpenAtrium and it works well for us.

Build an intranet for your business with Windows Small Business Server 2003 Remote Web Workspace: http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/sites.html#utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-sk&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=make%20intranet

How to Create a Small Business Intranet: http://www.mynewcompany.com/blog/how-to-create-a-small-business-intranet/

Videos: http://www.google.com/search?q=How+to+make+an+Intranet+for+business&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=ZD9&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=ivns&source=univ&tbs=vid:1&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=FAFyTc-pBMGblgfWwOmCAQ&ved=0CF4QqwQ

If you want to do this yourself, you’ll have to learn to Google as much of the information is online.

Might try it easier with Google Docs/Apps: http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/sites.html#utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-sk&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=make%20intranet

Lot of this can be put online and secured while providing everyone access that needs it. One disadvantage is if the Internet goes down. :P
